Overview
Overview: Sugar (F/R) Test
Sugar (F/R) is a blood test used to measure the level of glucose (sugar) in the blood to help screen, diagnose, and monitor diabetes mellitus.
What the Test Includes In Sugar (F/R) Test
- Fasting Blood Sugar (F): Measures blood sugar after 8–10 hours of fasting
- Random Blood Sugar (R): Measures blood sugar at any time of the day, regardless of meals
What Is Purpose of the Sugar (F/R) Test
- Detect high or low blood glucose levels
- Diagnose diabetes and pre-diabetes
- Monitor blood sugar control in diabetic patients
What Is Normal Reference Values For Sugar (F/R) Test
- Fasting: 70–99 mg/dL
- Random: < 140 mg/dL
What Is Procedure Of Sugar (F/R) Test
1️⃣ Patient Preparation
- Fasting Sugar (F):
- Patient fasts for 8–10 hours (only water allowed).
- Random Sugar (R):
- No fasting required.
2️⃣ Blood Sample Collection
- Patient is asked to sit or lie comfortably.
- A tourniquet is tied around the upper arm.
- The skin is cleaned with spirit/alcohol.
- Blood is drawn from a vein (usually in the arm) using a sterile needle.
- Sample is collected in a fluoride vial (prevents glucose breakdown).
3️⃣ Laboratory Analysis
- Blood sample is sent to the lab.
- Glucose level is measured using:
- GOD-POD method or
- Automated biochemistry analyzer
4️⃣ Reporting
- Result is reported in mg/dL
- Values are interpreted as normal, high, or low
🧫 Time Taken
- Blood collection: 2–3 minutes
- Report availability: Same day / few hours
