DHEA-SULFATE
DHEA-SULFATE
Observations Included- DHEA-Sulfate
Overview
Overview
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate form (DHEAS) are key precursors for sex steroids, with elevated levels indicating increased adrenal androgen production. Mild elevations are usually idiopathic, but 5-fold or higher increases can suggest an androgen-secreting adrenal tumor. Pronounced elevations are common in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to enzyme deficiencies, particularly in children.
When to Do a DHEAS Test (Indications)
Doctors usually order a DHEAS test when they suspect hormonal imbalance or adrenal gland issues.
For Women
✔ Excess hair growth (hirsutism)
✔ Acne that is severe or persistent
✔ Irregular or absent periods
✔ Symptoms of PCOS
✔ Male-pattern baldness
✔ Deepening voice or increased muscle mass (signs of high androgens)
For Men
✔ Low libido
✔ Erectile issues
✔ Suspected adrenal disorders
For Children
✔ Early puberty
✔ Excessive body hair
✔ Rapid growth of muscles or bones
For Both
✔ Suspected adrenal tumors
✔ Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
✔ Adrenal insufficiency (low adrenal function)
What Preparation for the DHEA-SULFATE Test
Usually no special preparation is needed.
BUT there are a few important points:
✔ You may need to avoid:
- Biotin supplements (vitamin B7) for 24 hours
- Hormonal medications (only if doctor advises)
- Steroid medications may affect results
✔ Timing
The test can usually be done any time of day, because DHEAS levels do not change much during the day.
✔ Fasting
Not required.
How the DHEA-SULFATE Test Is Done
The DHEAS test is a simple blood test.
- A lab technician cleans your arm.
- A needle is inserted into a vein.
- A small blood sample is taken.
- The sample is analyzed in the lab.
It usually takes just 2–5 minutes.
No pain except mild sting.
Interpretation of DHEA-SULFATE Results (What the Results Mean)
📌 High DHEAS
May indicate:
- PCOS
- Adrenal tumor (rare, but possible)
- Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
- Overactive adrenal glands
- High androgen production
Symptoms often include: acne, hair growth, irregular periods.
📌 Low DHEAS
May indicate:
- Adrenal insufficiency (Addison’s disease)
- Aging (levels naturally drop)
- Pituitary gland problems
Symptoms include: fatigue, low energy, low libido.
