Overview

Overview

Vitamin B12 in plasma binds to two proteins: transcobalamin (active, cell-available) and haptocorrin (inactive). Measuring holo-transcobalamin (holoTC) is thus more clinically relevant than total B12. Deficiency is also indicated by elevated homocysteine (tHcy) and methylmalonic acid (MMA) levels, as both accumulate when cellular B12 is low.

A Vitamin B-12 test measures the amount of Vitamin B-12 in your blood.
